How do I write romantic tension?

How do I make romance feel charged?

Beginner

Romantic tension is built on what isn't said and what isn't allowed. The reader needs to know both characters want something (a kiss, a confession, a shared moment) and that something is keeping them from having it (a misunderstanding, a barrier, the wrong moment, fear). The longer you can keep the want and the obstacle alive without resolving them, the more the tension compounds. Resolve too early and the air goes out. Resolve too late and the reader gives up.

Standard

Three knobs for tightening tension: proximity (put them in the same scene with a reason to stay), interruption (stop the moment one beat before it lands), and asymmetry (one wants more than the other knows). The slow build of asymmetric want plus interrupted moments plus repeated proximity is the engine of every great romance.
