What marketing do I actually need to do?

What marketing do I need to do for my book?

Beginner

For self-published authors: a cover that fits your genre, a back-cover blurb that hooks the right reader, an Amazon listing with the right keywords and categories, and an email list (even if it starts at 50 people). That's the floor. Everything else (social media, ads, BookTok, podcasts) is multiplier; pick one and learn it before adding a second. For traditionally published: most of this is the publisher's job up to launch, but the email list and social presence are still yours. Either way, the writing comes first; bad marketing makes good books invisible, but no marketing makes bad books invisible too.
