Do I need an outline?
Do I need to outline before I start writing?
Beginner
No, but most writers benefit from at least a rough one. The middle of a book is where stories die without one. A simple shape (here is where I start, here is the middle question, here is where it ends) is usually enough to get unstuck when the words slow down. If you love discovery-writing, write the first scene in the editor and let Pendraic suggest structure as you go.
Standard
Outliners and discovery writers (sometimes called plotters and pantsers) both finish books. The difference is when the structural work happens. Outliners do it up front. Discovery writers do it in revision. Pendraic supports both: the editor is friendly to discovery, the Beat Map view is friendly to outlining, and the Story Index keeps both honest.
What to try
- Open the Beat Map view
- Skim the structure templates
